Pediatric Sedation Dentistry at North Coast Dental Group

It’s not uncommon for children to feel anxious or scared about visiting the dentist. In fact, many adults share the same fear! At North Coast Dental Group, we understand how overwhelming a dental visit can be for young patients. Our goal is to create a calm, welcoming environment that helps ease your child’s nerves. However, in some cases, when fear or anxiety is too overwhelming, we may recommend sedation dentistry to ensure that your child receives the necessary care.

We offer two types of pediatric sedation options to help children feel more comfortable during dental treatments. The choice of sedation depends on your child’s level of anxiety and the type of procedure needed.

1. Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Ideal for: Mild anxiety or simple procedures

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is one of the most effective ways to help reduce anxiety in children. It is administered through a small mask placed over your child’s nose, delivering a gentle and adjustable flow of gas. Nitrous oxide helps your child feel calm, relaxed, and at ease during their dental visit, while keeping them awake and responsive throughout the procedure.

Benefits:

  • Eases anxiety and fear associated with dental treatments
  • Increases comfort during more invasive procedures
  • Allows for multiple treatments to be completed in a single visit

What to Expect:

  • Your child may feel lightheaded, experience a tingling sensation, or become a bit sleepy.
  • The effects wear off quickly once the gas is turned off, and your child will return to normal within minutes.
  • In the rare event of discomfort or an adverse reaction, the effects of nitrous oxide can be reversed immediately.

2. Moderate Oral Conscious Sedation

Ideal for: Moderate anxiety or longer, more invasive procedures

For children who experience moderate dental anxiety, we offer oral conscious sedation. This type of sedation is typically used for more involved or lengthy procedures. A mild sedative in syrup form is prescribed and taken prior to the appointment, helping your child enter a deeply relaxed state while still remaining conscious and able to respond to verbal cues.

Benefits:

  • Provides a deeper level of relaxation for children with moderate anxiety
  • Ideal for longer or more complex dental treatments
  • Your child will stay awake but will feel deeply relaxed and less aware of the procedure

3. General Anesthesia for Dental Treatment

In certain cases, general anesthesia may be recommended to ensure your child’s dental treatment is completed safely and comfortably. This option is typically suggested for young children, extensive dental needs, high levels of anxiety, or when there are more complex medical considerations. This procedure would be performed in the office with a licensed anesthesiologist.

Benefits:

  • Minimizes anxiety for children that have high levels of fear or stress during dental visits
  • Allows for the completion of multiple dental procedures in one appointment, reducing the need for multiple visits
  • Administered by experienced anesthesiologists, ensuring the safety and comfort of your child.
  • Will allow children to maintain positive dental experiences moving forward.
  • Easier for young children or those with developmental disabilities to undergo dental treatment

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

At North Coast Dental Group, we believe in making your child’s first dental visit a positive and enjoyable experience. During this visit, we will:

  • Perform a comprehensive oral exam to assess your child’s dental health
  • Clean your child’s teeth to remove plaque and tartar
  • Apply a fluoride treatment to help strengthen their teeth
  • Take X-rays, if needed, to check for any underlying dental issues
  • Discuss teething and oral habits to support healthy development
  • Review good oral hygiene practices, including proper brushing techniques
  • Offer dietary counseling to help protect your child’s teeth

Making the Visit Engaging

We encourage your child to actively participate in their visit by choosing their favorite toothpaste flavor, asking questions, and learning more about their dental care. By involving your child and fostering open communication, we help them feel comfortable and confident during their visit. Our goal is to build a trusting relationship with your child, setting the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

At North Coast Dental Group, our focus is on prevention—stopping cavities before they start. We recommend regular dental visits every 6 months to build a strong rapport with your child, monitor their dental development, and promptly address any potential concerns.

Starting early ensures your child’s smile stays healthy and bright for years to come!

All Smiles from Our Little Patients…

“Friendly, helpful staff, amazing Drs. You feel like family there. Even with Covid. They know who my daughters are just by sight. Thay makes my kids feel comfortable with them. Highly recommend!!!”

Both my kiddos have been going here since they were two and they love seeing their dentist and hygienist! It’s always been a positive experience for them and that is crucial and why we will never go anywhere else.

New patients and families welcome!
